Canmaker Ball to expand plastics business

February 28: Ball Corporation is planning to expand its plastics business with the acquisition of Alcan Packaging’s North American food and drinks plastics container operations.

The $180 million cash deal will add three plants in Illinois, Ohio and Ontario and some research assets to the plastics operations of Ball, which is also North America’s largest manufacturer of food and drinks cans.

With annual sales of $487 million, plastics packaging represents about a fifth of Ball’s North American sales of $2.39 billion a year. It also has some plastics packaging business within its Asia operations. Ball’s worldwide sales are $5.7bn.

Ball is also in the process of acquiring the businesses in North and South America of US Can, the leading aerosol can manufacturer.

Ball’s chief executive David Hoover said: “This acquisition enables Ball to supply a broad range of blue-chip customers, some of whom are new to us and some of whom know Ball well through our metal food container operations.”

Alcan Packaging will be retaining its pharmaceutical plastics packaging business in the region.
