Canpack wins gold certification for sustainability performance

Canpack Group has been awarded a gold certification for social responsibility and sustainability performance by a leading corporate social responsibility ratings company.

EcoVadis has placed the Polish canmaker within the top five per cent of the 70,000 companies assessed worldwide.

“We are thrilled to be recognised with this Gold rating from EcoVadis. Being a responsible business is a core priority for Canpack and this formal recognition from EcoVadis reflects the progress we have made to meet our sustainability goals,” said chief executive Roberto Villaquiran.

“It also shows that Canpack is on the right track to be a more responsible employer, packaging manufacturer, community member, and business partner.”

EcoVadis assesses a company’s ESG rating by examining its performance in more than a

dozen criteria and, based on their findings, awards a score out of 100. The canmaker didn’t disclose the score awarded for 2020, but the most recent result is an improvement on last year, when the company was awarded a silver rating.

Canpack credited the improved performance to higher scores achieved in all assessed themes, including environment, labour and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement.

Last January, the canmaker set up a range of environmental commitments focused on lowering its impact across five key areas. The targets are set until 2025 and use 2019’s performance as a baseline. It pledged to reduce electricity consumption by seven per cent; thermal energy consumption by six per cent; water consumption by 13 per cent; waste generation consumption by five per cent, as well as improve waste recycling by 94 per cent.

“As a truly multinational business, these targets show how committed we are to playing our part in protecting the future of the planet. The targets will prove vital to us as we continue to up our game when it comes to becoming even more environmentally and socially responsible,” said sustainability director John O’Maoileoin.
