CKW modifies BrewDog twist conveyors to handle slim cans

Multinational craft brewer BrewDog has modified its UK filling line to handle sleek 330ml cans as well as regular-sized versions.

Quick-release toggle clamps were added to an existing twist conveyor line that carries empty cans to a rinser before filling. Minor modifications were also made to the guide rails so that the line could switch to the slim cans with the turn of a lever. The modifications were made to a system built earlier this year at Brewdog’s brewery in Ellon, near Aberdeen.

“Our toggle clamps allow the site operators to carry out size changeovers fast and efficiently between production,” said Chris Kenyon, global director for engineering at CKW Engineering, which installed the equipment.

Kenyon explained that Wigan, Lancashire-based CKW was accustomed to installing can twists that are adapted to suit customers’ particular business needs.

“Our can twists can be made to a set size or bespoke to an existing line layout within the canmaking industry, beverage industry or food manufacturing,” he said.

“All of our can twists are made by hand from a double-annealed stainless-steel D shaped bar. Complete with identification tags to allow the correct selection of can size. For a finished printed can, we are able to coat the bars with a clip on plastic to protect the can and also prevent wear to the can twist bars.”

Founded in 2007, Scotland’s self-proclaimed ‘punk’ brewer BrewDog is a craft beer and pub chain based near Aberdeen. CKW specialises in the manufacture, installation and maintenance of conveyor systems, can twists and can rinser units.
