First Belgian strong dark ale in cans to be exported to US

A Belgian strong ale called Delirium Nocturnum, which is being packed in 500ml aluminium cans for the first time, will soon be shipped to the US for distribution in September.

Brouwerij Huyghe’s dark ale will be cashing in on the growing popularity of canned speciality beers in the US, says distributor Better Beverage Leaders Inc (BBL).

In 2019, Brouwerij Huyghe’s Delirium Red made its debut in four packs of 500ml cans, which increased its US sales while boosting draft and bottle sales as well. The company’s Delirium Tremens was the first to appear in cans several years ago.

“We’re very excited to have the opportunity to bring a long-standing brand like Nocturnum to market in a new format,” said Laura Day, chief executive of US-based BBL.

“We’ve seen a significant increase in distribution and brand recognition in the past with Tremens and Red when the 500ml can format was made available.

“Nocturnum arriving in late Summer leading into its most popular time of year is something we feel lucky to offer. Considering the current state of beer production during the era of Covid-19, we are fortunate to represent Brouwerij Huyghe as they continue to create new ways for beer-lovers to access their world-class brews.”

Brouwerij Huyghe has been owned and operated by the same family since 1904. Currently, the fourth generation of the family, Alain De Laet, runs the Brewery in Melle, Belgium, just outside of Ghent. Brouwerij Huyghe has exported to the US since the early 90s. It is best known for the Delirium range of beers, with Delirium Tremens claimed to be the number one exported Belgian speciality beer in the world.

The Delirium brand of beers is recognised the world over by its iconic pink elephant branding.
