Shipments in the US of cans used for food were record-setting in this year’s first quarter and continuing into the second as consumers responded to coronavirus lockdowns.

For the first time in many years, production by canmakers of food cans rose sharply, by 5.2 per cent, led by cans for soup, a category that until recently was considered on the decline, as shown in Table 1.
