North American beverage can shipments jump in third quarter

Beverage can shipments in North America were up by 3.3 per cent in the third quarter continuing growth which has exceeded that in 2018, according to the latest figures from the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI).

The Washington-based organisation that represents canmakers reported that 25.3 billion cans were shipped to customers in the US and Canada in the three months to the end of September.

Shipments of cans for soft drinks were up by 4.0 per cent at 15.1bn, while cans for beer were up 2.3 per cent at 10.2bn.

In the first nine months of 2019, beverage can shipments in North America were 73.8bn, up 3.0 per cent on the same period a year earlier.

The CMI has been reviewing its data for the past three years. In a statement it said: “Following a second review of data submitted to CMI, it was determined that industry shipment data was under reported in 2017, 2018 and year-to-date 2019.
“Minor adjustments to historical figures are reflected in the data reported, resulting in slightly improved growth rates for the US and Canada beverage can shipment industry data for full year 2018 and year-to-date 2019.”
