Production starts at Canpack’s new beverage can plant in Czech Republic

Canpack's Czech Republic canmaking facility

Commercial production of beverage cans has started at Canpack’s new canmaking plant in the Czech Republic, just 10 months after its construction started.

The €100 million (US$118m) greenfield project at Stribro in the Plzeň region of the central European country, is making cans specifically for the Plzeňský Prazdroj brewery, which is owned by Asahi in Japan.

Eventual capacity will be one billion cans a year, with room for expansion.

“This facility is a landmark in Canpack’s continued strategic partnership with Asahi and Plzeňský Prazdroj. Yet another step to becoming the global partner of choice for impactful, experience-enhancing and sustainable packaging solutions” says Stephen McAneny, group commercial officer at Canpack, which is based at Kracow in Poland.

The plant was built near Plzeň as a result of a mutual agreement between Canpack and its customer Plzeňský Prazdroj with the purpose of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by limiting the shipping of cans.

“The new factory in close proximity of the brewery will contribute to decrease the impact on the environment, when reducing the carbon footprint. We will save a distance of 1.75 million kilometers a year, which corresponds to a reduction in CO2 emissions of 1.4 thousand tons per year, an amount that would have to absorb a forest of the size of four Velký Bolevec lakes in Pilsen,” says Grant Liversage, chief executive of Plzeňský Prazdroj.

Attila Szabo, general manager of Canpack Czechia, commented: “We are delighted to commence production at our brand-new Czechia facility. The plant was built in a record time of 10 months, in what are unprecedented circumstances relating to Covid-19. This is thanks to the dedication and expertise of our unique workforce.

“With this modern facility we will be able to offer Plzeňský Prazdroj and our European customer base innovative and sustainable packaging whilst strengthening the Canpack footprint in Central Europe.”

Canpack has been expanding its beverage can manufacturing network in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, South America and more recently announced its first plant would be built in the US. The Czech plant is its eighth to be located in Europe.
