Canmaking in focus
A new necker, trimmer, and updated decorator for D&I canmaking lines has been developed by US-based Belvac Production Machinery. Details of the expansion of Belvac’s ‘One Source’ multi-divisional support for the canmaking industry are available from the company.
CarnaudMetalbox Engineering (CMbE), the UK-based subsidiary of canmaker Crown Holdings that produces a wide range of process equipment under the Reformat brand, is working on a new machine that further enhances its “capability to deliver a full canmaking solution”. It is also developing its new Sterling decorator at a beta canmaking location in Europe.
Meanwhile, tooling for food and general line cans, as well as end tooling for aerosol, food, general line can ends and twist-off caps, is the speciality of Euro Tecno Tool SRL of Italy.
Bodymaker power transmission – brakes, clutch, turn units, cams – and monitoring equipment is offered by Goizper Industrial, which is focusing on its Smart G monitoring and diagnosis system. This preventative maintenance system minimises machine downtime and thus helps to cut maintenance costs.
A range of equipment and services for DRD two-piece canmaking, three-piece canmaking and end-making production is offered by Guangdong Hanjiang Light Industrial Machinery of China. It is also working on research and development into multi-die production lines for D&I two-piece cans and other variants for milk powder, beverage, food and aerosol cans. Elsewhere, Kosobo Company, also from China, is concentrating on its expertise in supplying machinery, tooling and automation for manufacturing fancy cans. Kosobo also supplies decorators, coating machines and canmaking lines.
Mall+Herlan is working on a new CMX impact-extrusion line for monobloc cans. With a speed of 250cpm, the line is said to enable customers to produce 25 per cent more cans than conventional lines. A new MHBx trimming machine has also been developed.
Soon to make its debut is Mall+Herlan’s DigiCan digital printing machine. This is said to open up a wide range of opportunities, such as high-quality photo-realistic graphic printing and cost-effective production of small batches. Also developed is a new necking machine, which has 72 tool stations and a speed of 250cpm. This enables the production of a variety of shaped, necked, and even embossed cans and bottles.
An intelligent can body welding machine designed for making aerosols at high speeds, the Dodo-500H, will soon be launched by Shantou Xinqing Cannery Machinery. The company is also promoting its Dodo-400D milk powder can body welding machine.
Switzerland’s Soudronic is the leading manufacturer of turnkey canmaking lines for three-piece welded cans, as well as two-piece DRD lines and end-making systems for cans, pails, drums and irregularly-shaped containers.
A key new feature is Soudronic’s MLC 4.0 line control system, which ensures continuous flow of materials.
The Soucan 1100 high-speed welding line equipped with the latest monitoring and process system options is the highlight of Soudronic’s range, alongside the Unipress sheet-feed multi-die press, which is suitable for producing a wide range of drawn cans and ends.
The Uniseal HSS RCP high-speed sealing machine for peel-off ends now features the Retort curl protection system as an inline option.
Soudronic subsidiary Cantec, which produces forming systems used in the manufacture of three-piece cans, DRD cans, ends, caps, and easy-open shells, continues to offer the Can-O-Mat and End-O-Mat multi-die necking, beading and seaming systems.
Another Soudronic subsidiary, Ocsam Cepak, which makes slitters and transfer systems for feeding blanks to three-piece welding lines, is promoting the SGS120, which is equipped with a double infeed system to enable idle stroke-free production. The SGS120 can be connected to a Soucan 600 welding machine by means of a transport system that improves line efficiency.
Meanwhile, Sabatier of France, another Soudronic company, is a key supplier of production systems for cylindrical, conical or irregularly-shaped three-piece general line metal containers.
A new feature of the three-piece can body forming systems offered by Boda Machinery from China, such as the five-turret D176 and D153 machines running at up to 200cpm, is a station for making the seaming curl in a smaller diameter, providing stackability.
In addition to operating 20 end-making lines with capacity for 3.5 billion ends a year, China’s Fujian Xianhe Packaging operates its own coating and printing lines that process 50,000 tonnes of tinplate a year. An automatic empty can packer is the company’s latest product. The canmaker also trades in tinplate, easy-open ends, lug caps and three-piece beverage cans.
A range of canmaking equipment is offered by China’s Golden Wing Machinery Co. Specialities include equipment for easy-open and peel-off ends; aerosol cones and domes, twist-off lids, tamper-proof caps; two-piece cans, lids, rings and bottoms, as well as palletising and wrapping systems.
US-based Stolle Machinery’s range of canmaking equipment for D&I two-piece cans, including advances in can forming, decorating, end-making and automated controls, is used in plants worldwide.
Key updated product is Stolle’s Inkjector, first introduced in 2017, which now features a complete closed-loop decorator quality control system. The main components of the system include a simulated high-speed, 360-degree vision inspection camera and printing cylinder registration station. Print quality feedback from the camera enables the Inkjector to control both the plate-cylinder registration and inker fountain keys in real time to maintain print quality.
A new bottom reformer module for the E-NCKR, Stolle’s die-necking, flanging and inspection system that was first introduced at Cannex 2018, is listed, together with the EO6 six-out easy-open end conversion system.
Stolle has been updating its Canceptor D&I bodymaker, and has redesigned and upgraded the redraw system for the Ragsdale D&I bodymaker. Completing the line-up is the company’s inSight plant-wide automation and intelligent control software.
Sunnran Packaging Machinery Co of China, which provides spares for can and end-making equipment, is promoting a new product for the automation of fancy can manufacture. Meanwhile, Zhoushan Jiaolong Machinery Co, formerly known as Zhoushan Jinjiao Machinery, has a product range that includes end production lines, aerosol cone and dome production lines, screw-cap production lines and D&I canmaking machines.
A welding machine that produces 153mm-diameter cans at up to 150cpm, a flanging and seaming machine capable of up to 80cpm for small cans and a flanging and seaming machine for rectangular cans, capable of up to 40cpm, has been developed by China’s Shantou Guanyou Machinery Co. Features include servo motor drives and a blank rejection system.
A patented process for making aluminium bowls, developed by Shenzhen Youpeng Packaging Product, has been developed. The company also produces easy-open ends, DRD cans, ends for craft beer cans, retortable easy-open ends and tinplate easy-open ends with a safe-rim.
Welders, aerosol can leak testing systems, drying units, internal and external coating machines offered by Shantou Zhengyi Tin Can Machine Co, are complemented now by the MD-D50 auto stacker for pails.
Conveying and handling systems
Bunting, formerly known as Bunting Magnetics Co, specialises in a line of magnetic conveying systems and magnetic printing cylinders that are compatible with all types of decorators.
The US company’s magnetic plate rails provide stability, control, and eliminate the risk of damage that grippers and mechanical devices can cause to thinner can walls. The magnetic decorating cylinders can be custom designed to suit any type of decorator and are supplied for all popular types of decorator.
NSM Magnettechnik specialises in lid and can handling, such as closure palletising and depalletising equipment.
Testing and inspection
The AUTO-XTS stand-alone measurement system for non-destructive, double-seam inspection of aluminium and steel cans is the latest product from CMC-Kuhnke, which is best known for the SEAMscan XTS III.
An in-line version of an earlier machine, the AUTO-XTS is being used by beverage fillers to prevent seaming issues or detect them as soon as they happen. Waste is also eliminated as cans can be directed back into the line for further processing or used for additional testing.
The SEAMscan XTS III is a non-destructive system for double-seam inspection, capable of performing both cross-sectional measurements and a 360-degree tightness scan. This system saves beverage fillers having to empty, rinse, dry, cut and then measure cans.
Test and inspection equipment specialist Sencon has completely redesigned its ELTP End Light Tester, which is now branded as Quasar Light Detection. The system, which is said to deliver Industry 4.0 data capability, is equipped with the latest electronic and mechanical advances, doubling detection sensitivity while preventing false rejects. It features up to six-lane capability and increased productivity.
Sencon’s MLT Micro Leak Tester for ends has also received an upgrade, with an increase in processing power and mechanical changes that further enhance it. A new processor delivers adaptive inspection algorithms (AiA), which dynamically respond to changing conditions on the line to maximise detection while minimising false positives.
The company has launched automatic enamel rater called PG5600, which has a throughput of 5cpm – said to be one of the fastest available. Also new is the non-contact finished back end gauge’s ability to measure flange angle, seamer clearance and reform features in addition to regular finished can dimensions.
Pressco Technology continues to produce its DecoSpector360 system which detects spots, smears, smudges, registration issues, cut blankets, partial prints and missing ink as well as monitoring any shift in colour.
The system is capable of inspecting every can exiting the decorator to identify isolated and repetitive print-related defects using multiple cameras, precision optics and sophisticated software. The DecoSpector360 is said to reduce HFI incidents and save plants tens of thousands of dollars every month from spoilage, re-sort operations and lost production time.
Torus Technology Group has been working on new measurement equipment, including a four-station production line. This includes internal/external lacquer distribution, ISG colour dot recognition, UV rim-coat detection and colour inspection. Torus also lists the B302 gauge, which has been adapted for non-contact inspection of cans.
Italian inspection system specialist DeCoSystem has developed upgraded versions of the Spectro and Perfecto print inspection systems, along with the new Momento system to carry out 100 per cent control of printing.
A range of UV and LED curing systems is offered by IST Metz of Germany. The programmable and flexibly adjustable shutter position of the LAMPcure UV technology provides individualised options for material and energy requirements. Meanwhile, a specially-developed optical system for the company’s LEDcure technology is said to guarantee maximum efficiency for set-ups common in sheet-fed printing.
China-based Shunde Fulin Machinery Manufacture Co has supplied more than 60 sets of its latest LED UV curing system to global customers since 2018. The system is said to offer benefits such as lower power consumption, compact size, quick heating, long life and environmental friendliness.
Coatings and sealants
A range of internal and external coatings – solvent and water-based – for aerosol cans, two- and three-piece food cans, general line cans and aluminium tubes, is offered by Actega DS and Actega Rhenania.
Actega DS produces Provalin, which is said to be the first closure sealant compound without PVC or plasticisers for twist-off and P/T seals. Provalin for P/T seals will soon be available under the ACTGreen brand, which is recognisable by its green sealing ring. Also offered are Svelon sealants for crown corks and aluminium caps, as well as Svelox, an oxygen scavenger for use with lug caps.
Meanwhile, Actega Rhenania produces a range of coating and compounds for internal and external applications of lug caps. This is complemented by a wide range of adhesive coatings for crown corks, aluminium caps and roll-on pilfer-proof caps.
Henkel produces coatings for monobloc cans used in the personal care sector, surface treatments on two-piece cans, and sealants and coatings for three-piece aerosol cans. It has published a white paper, covering the company’s triple-safety risk assessment programme, entitled ‘Food contact risk assessment of BPA-NI coatings – demonstrating the safety of NIAS’.
A water-based post-repair coating for steel easy-open end cans has been developed by UBIS (Asia). The coating is said to be environmentally friendly as it produces few emissions of volatile organic compound and emits no odour.
End making systems
Guangdong Enpack Packaging Co claims to be the biggest producer of closures for metal packaging in Asia. A highlight of its range is peel-off and easy-open ends, as well as beverage lids and other components for food cans. Next year, Enpack plans to open a new plant at Shantou in China.
Easy-open-end manufacturer Jieyang City Hualong EOE of China has a range of ends that come in diameters from 52mm to 153mm in tinplate, tin-free steel and aluminium. Since March 2019, Hualong has updated its equipment and added nine production lines in an investment of US$12 million. It also plans to add a six-lane easy-open end production line in 2020, which is claimed to be the first in China. This will increase the company’s annual production capacity to more than 3.5 billion units.
Italy’s Ricome Can Making Solutions offers high- and medium-speed end making systems, currently supplying a number of leading canmakers. It also recently supplied food and beverage giant Nestlé with equipment to produce a special lid. Ricome also accepts commissions to design special equipment, such as a two-out strip feed press for 603 (155mm) ends used on 3kg tomato cans for an Italian canmaker.
Zhejiang Changhong Can End Making Co of China offers a range of steel full-aperture easy-open ends and sanitary ends.
Two machines for two-piece can and end making have been developed by Ing Yu from China. The DDH-100 high-speed press makes cups for beverage cans, and features quick lifting for changing dies. The H-125 conversion press for easy-open ends used on food and beverage cans comes with belt transfer, tab material feeder and downstacker. Both machines use Siemens control systems.
Can and end stock
Handan Jintai Packing Material offers tinplate and tin-free steel, mostly used by canmakers in China. The company operates pickling lines, six-roll reversible rolling mills, hydrogen annealing furnaces, coating lines and cutting lines. It supplies canstock for food packaging, printed metal cans and chemical drums.
Manufacturer of electrolytic tinplate (ETP) and tin mill black plate (TMBP), Jiangsu Global Packing Technology of China, specialises in making laminated ETP/TMBP. The company’s film-coated steel is used for products such as food barrels, aerosol cans, toys, gift packaging, beverage packaging and chemical barrels. Meanwhile, Jiangsu Suxun New Material Co offers tin-free steel for can ends, screw and lug caps, snap and press-on closures and shallow-drawn food cans.
German tinplate manufacturer Thyssenkrupp Rasselstein has been promoting its chromium-free passivation process for tinplate, which prevents the growth of tin oxide during storage. Another key product is its Solidflex packaging steel, which enables the manufacture of lighter three-piece steel aerosol cans. Rasselstein has launched digital services that have been developed to provide customers with added value while simplifying existing processes.
Another supplier of tin-free steel, electrolytic tinplate and TMBP is Tianjin Jukun Metal Technology. The company’s products are mainly used for tinplate cans, barrels, caps, food cans, beverage cans, tea containers, nutrient packaging, oil gas drums, chemical barrels, household appliances and electronic products.
It has a production capacity of around 73,000t and exports 13,000-18,000t per year to Italy, South America and south east Asia.
Changzhou Randa International Trade Co supplies tinplate, TFS, printed and laminated steel and easy-open ends.
Aluminium coil used to make can bodies, ends and tabs is offered by Shandong Mikon Metal Co, which says it supplies to all the major players in the canmaking industry.
In addition to laying claim to having the largest tinplate service centre in northern China, Tianjin Kunry Steel Co offers scroll cutting, printing and lacquering services. Meanwhile, manufacturer of polyester-film coated steel to the canmaking sector, Zhejiang Yingyi Metal Packing, supplies steel for cans used for rice pudding, milk, chemicals, hot pot seasoning, sauce and mustard for brands such as Wahaha, Junlebao, Suzhou Huayuan and others.
Nantong Tengyu Environmental Equipment Co offers a wide equipment range that it manufactures for the metal packaging industry.
This includes energy-saving waste gas treatment and environmental equipment, ovens, wickets, Teflon chain rollers, rubber rollers, bundle turners and wicket washing machines.
The company supplies customers in Greece, Indonesia, Malaysia, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, India, Iran and South Korea.
